The Story of MFWC
MFWC traces its beginnings back to the early 1900s. In 1915, F.D. Newell began offering cold storage services to the customers of De Soto Creamery & Produce Co. with a brand-new warehouse space. Within four years, the Newell family storage services were so successful, they were able file for and receive a Cold Storage Warehouse License #1 through the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
As Minneapolis Cold Storage Co., the company continued to operate into the early 1960s when F.D. Newell Jr. established warehouses in Albert Lea and Worthington to provide cold storage to beef and pork producers in the region. When the Minneapolis Department of Parks and Recreation took over the Minneapolis Cold Storage building in 1978 to redevelop Nicollet Island into a greener space along the Mississippi River, the Newell family consolidated the company warehouses into one corporation reestablished as the Minnesota Freezer Warehouse Company.
In 1992, MFWC was in the process of extending services with the development of a new facility in Austin, MN. In addition to the construction of this multipurpose cold storage warehouse, MFWC founded the F.D. Newell Jr. Memorial Scholarship to honor the passing of F.D. Newell Jr. In 2014, the Newell family’s fourth generation began management of MFWC.
